The 9th of 21 street lamps to be installed as part of Mischa Kuball’s Solidarity Grid.
Its installation was celebrated in November 2014.
Especially created for Solidarity Grid, the Wuhan street lamp is an elaborate totem-pole featuring traditional Chinese floral designs and golden cranes.
Christchurch and Wuhan are Sister Cities, having signed a Friendship City Agreement in April 2006. The donated street lamp is a meaningful gift from Wuhan as our cities approach the 10th anniversary of this relationship. A highlight of our cultural and educational connection is Christchurch's annual celebration of the Chinese Lantern Festival.
Wuhan is a large and densely populated city in central China - the capital of Hubei Province. It is known as the "Chicago of China" due to its important role as a domestic transportation hub. Many railways, motorways and airports make Wuhan a connector with Mainland China - contributing to its status as a key player politically, economically and financially.
