A Cage for Voices & The Red Zone

UK-based artist Tom Dale contributes three works to SCAPE 2018, two works made in Ōtautahi, a sculpture Monument to the Present and a video work The Red Zone, plus an earlier video work A Cage for Voices where the depths of the ocean are probed by a voice looking to understand the significance of a series of objects that fall through the water from the surface above. The new video work, shot in October 2017 in the Burwood area of the Red Zone, explores the changing states of our surroundings and the turbulence of our interior realms, speaking of moments of rupture and forces of resilience.
These video works can be viewed throughout the Season online, on an exterior screen in the forecourt of CoCA, and within the opening weekend public programmes at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū’s auditorium on Sunday 7 October 2018.
Tom Dale explores ideas around the preposterous and absurd, using sculptures and film to make explicit the inherent contradictions of the grand gestures of culture and society. Dale is based in London. He studied Sculpture at Sheffield Hallam University (1997), received an MFA at Goldsmiths (2007) and was a doctoral researcher at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge from 2009 – 2013.
