Gill Gatfield
200mm high x 300mm wide
Weight – 8 kg
Black granite

Traversing cultures, beliefs and knowledge systems, the X-form expresses identity, diversity and inclusion. Shaped like the rangatira signatures on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Treaty of Waitangi, the X-mark Aroha establishes a baseline axis on a young nation’s geopolitical map. A universal chromosome shared by all humankind, this miniature ‘kiss’ combines and connects. A multiplication and plus sign, Aroha conveys the exponential power of love.

Gill Gatfield has an LLB and an MFA (Hons) from the University of Auckland. Her abstract conceptual artwork is exhibited internationally and held in collections in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and Europe. In 2015 she exhibited The Kiss at Sculpture by the Sea, Denmark, a biennial exhibition that attracts over half-a-million visitors, and was artist-in-residence at the Women’s Museum of Denmark.
