About SCAPE Public Art Season 2020
SCAPE Public Art Season 2020 opened on 3 October, showcasing the theme of Secrets and Lies.
We presented a strong Ōtautahi Christchurch and Aotearoa New Zealand focused artists’ programme, with six new temporary artworks presented over an extended season. The programme was linked to an in-depth Art, Learning and Wellbeing offering promoted online with a base at Tūranga, our central city library.
Jamie Hanton is the managing curator for SCAPE Seasons 2020 – 2022, with the overarching theme of Fictions. Fictions aims to introduce elements of mystery and moments of revelation to the Ōtautahi Christchurch cityscape.
Secrets and Lies rewarded audiences’ desires to play detective and uncover hidden stories and meanings amongst a selection of artworks placed around the city. The selection positioned New Zealand artists as the protagonists of this discussion in Aotearoa. The artists selected were Jacquelyn Greenbank, Martin Awa Clarke Langdon, Melissa Macleod, Natasha Matila-Smith, Dane Mitchell and Sorawit Songsataya, delivering a wide and diverse range of stories, viewpoints and perspectives from different backgrounds.
Re:ACTIVATE Aspiring Artists
In addition to our Art, Learning and Wellbeing offering, our RE:ACTIVATE Aspiring Artists programme brought to life three designs by young, local aspiring artists. These talented creatives at Waitaha Canterbury primary and high schools had their dreams turned into reality, with their artwork displayed at Hack Circle. For its fifth year, we were proudly supported by Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers, with support from Christchurch City Council and Christchurch City Libraries.
People’s Choice Awards
The people have spoken, and The Strong Woman and STAY are your favourite pieces from our 2020 season!
Using a mirage of coloured mosaic tiles, Rangi Ruru Girls’ School student Mollie Shaw won the season category with The Strong Woman.
Anthony Gormley’s STAY was chosen as the winner of our legacy artworks, with its two installations in the Avon River and The Arts Centre.
